Most manufacturing plants experience problems from time to
time that interfere with their productivity. Sometimes these
problems are not obvious to the people who operate the plant,
or the operating people are too busy to investigate the
problems. The people at Midland Engineering Limited have had
experience in solving problems in a wide variety of
facilities.
For example:
In a plant using a batch process, increased production was
needed to meet sales orders. An investigation showed that
there was considerable lost time that could be reduced by
changing the feed piping and the piping used to empty the
reactors. This was done at low cost and did not require any
change in the process itself, and resulted in a significant
increase in production capacity. Further investigation showed
that production capacity could also be increased by minor
changes in the process itself. A distillation column was not
operating at design capacity. An investigation showed that
there was a problem with the installation of the internal
components of the column which was corrected at a low cost. By
correcting these components, column capacity was increased to
design capacity. _ A dryer used to dry a granular material was
not performing as designed. An investigation showed that the
problem was not the dryer, but the feed material to the dryer,
which was too wet because of problems in the equipment used to
dewater the slurry. By changing the dewatering step, the dryer
was able to operate at design capacity.
